Meet Rueger – Adoption Pending

Rueger is a 4-year-old male Airedale Terrier with a rough past but a hopeful future. For most of his life, he lived outdoors with very little human interaction. Since being rescued, he's received the medical care he desperately needed, including a full veterinary workup, neutering, grooming, vaccinations, and testing. He is heartworm negative and is currently being treated for hookworms and whipworms. He will need two additional deworming treatments (3 weeks & 3 months).

Despite everything he's been through, Rueger has a very sweet nature. He simply doesn't yet know that people can be trusted. Rueger is extremely fearful and skittish around humans. He experiences anxiety, especially when walking through doorways, and he spends much of his time quietly pacing. Right now, he doesn't respond to his name and isn't food motivated, which is not uncommon for dogs who have lived with little human interaction.

Because of his fearfulness, Rueger is also an escape risk. A securely fenced yard is required, and he should always be walked on a leash. If allowed to slip away, catching him can be very difficult.

Rueger's ideal home will understand that progress won't happen overnight. He needs a calm, patient family willing to let him adjust at his own pace, celebrate small victories, and give him the time and consistency he needs to learn that he's finally safe. Experience with shy or under-socialized dogs would be a wonderful bonus. He has been good around another female's dale and kids 8yo and up. But he will need a lot of attention...

Jethro

Jethro was living as an intact stray in rural North Carolina when a local person rescued him. The original rescuer was unable to keep him, and he was transferred to an ARG volunteer in Greensboro, who groomed him and took him for an initial vet check. The initial vet visit revealed that he was heartworm positive and unchipped.

A second ARG volunteer took him in as a foster in February. A Raleigh vet completed microchipping and estimated his age at “not more than 2.” X-rays confirmed that Jethro was likely hit by a car as a puppy, with injury noted to his hips. The vet does not think Jethro’s post-accident injuries were professionally managed, but was surprised by how well they had healed. He exhibits some rear-end weakness, but not in a way that greatly limits his activities. Despite his bumpy past, he was a pet at some point. His tail is docked, and his ears were almost certainly glued.

Jethro is now neutered, and he completed his heartworm treatment in June. Following his last heartworm injection, Jethro had an adverse reaction and was hospitalized overnight. Since his discharge, he has recovered nicely. He is current on all vaccinations and is on heartworm preventative. He is fully grown but just a bit over 50 lbs- a small guy!

While he is not fully housebroken, he is close, with only occasional “accidents.” He now routinely “asks” to go out for potty breaks. He loves to chew but has not been destructive, focusing exclusively on his chew toys. (He is mouthy a little and would love to “chew” on his foster mom.) This is a very food-motivated dog; he has a good appetite and is not picky. He is crate-trained and will often sleep in his crate without prompting.

Jethro is a happy dog and wants to play with his much older Airedale sister. She is not interested, though, so he is content to seek attention from his human family. He also likes to sit in the bay window and look outside. Jethro would likely do best in a home with another younger dog and no small children. Because of his previous hip injury, the vet recommends that Jethro not become a running/jogging companion. The vet believes he can tolerate hikes and leash walks.

Sam

Sam is a handsome 6-year-old Airedale currently thriving in a professional training program.

Sam will be looking for an Airedale-experienced home that understands structure, consistency, and leadership, and will continue the routines he’s learning now. Sam will benefit by bring the ONLY dog in the home and having consistent rules to live by.

Frances

Francis is back with Airedale Rescue Group and is hoping to find the experienced home he deserves.

At 8 years old, Francis is a happy, healthy, playful Airedale with plenty of life left to enjoy. He knows his name and several commands, including sit, paw, and gentle—and he definitely appreciates being reminded to take treats gently! He is house-trained, loves his meals, and enjoys being part of the action.

Like all true Airedales, Francis is incredibly affectionate. He loves scratches and pets—especially on his backside—and he'll lean into you with all 90 pounds when he's soaking up the attention. One of his favorite things is weaving back and forth between your legs while you're standing. It clearly makes him happy and is just one of his endearing Airedale quirks.

Francis has many wonderful qualities. He has lived peacefully around cats and small dogs without chasing them, and he enjoys the companionship of people. He thrives on routine and clear expectations.

Like many Airedales, Francis also has some behaviors that require an experienced owner. He is a resource guarder, particularly around food, toys, and spaces he considers his own. He can be very vocal when other animals are nearby, especially around mealtime or while in his kennel. While he has displayed growling and warning behaviors toward other animals, he has not injured another dog in foster care.

Francis's biggest challenge is leash walking. He is an exceptionally strong 90-pound dog who pulls with significant force. Despite trying several training tools, including no-pull and head halters, he still requires someone who has the strength, confidence, and experience to continue working with him. For this reason, he is not a good match for someone with mobility concerns or anyone who may have difficulty managing a powerful dog on leash.

One other important note: Francis has a chicken allergy, so he does best on a chicken-free diet. His current favorite is Iams Lamb & Rice, and he has done very well on it.

Francis is looking for a home that understands the Airedale personality and is willing to provide consistent training, structure, and leadership. With the right person, he has the potential to be a loyal and rewarding companion.
